ICE – Poem by Segun Adekoye

This strange darkness
carries fear and blindness within its pouch
uncertainty, like the future sits under its eaves
… or is it the future?
Stiff frozen or invincible
yet my consciousness soars without wings
like I’m not or I’m nuts
in this vacuum of ice
then the golden flickers of solid wax makes that blackness nothing but virtual slivers.
Animals have crippled eyes
that depend on the weakest guide of light to survive, see in a seamless world,
this habitation of flesh is decrepit too
for the elements of existence must not fail
else the mightiest of mortals
yea, generals of the deceased yesteryears
are nurtured stone-dead in the mocking lullaby of immortality.
This is the iceberg that moveth
wither the ill, chilly wind listeth
all age will be frozen
indeed a dark, defiant death.
